The rules about AI included on the Monthly Competitions page have been simplified from the comprehensive definitions shown below ...
BBCC's position on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in BBCC monthly competitions is guided by two principles:
Principle 1 – The club recognizes the skill of the photographer to depict objects and scenes with a camera and considers that the widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is against the spirit of the club's purpose.
Principle 2 - Nearly all AI generated images utilize photos without permission, license, or knowledge from the original photographer. The elements may not be recognizable in the form generated by AI, but using images as the basis of new creations is an infringement of the original photographer's work.
BBCC's definition of AI is as follows:
Artificial intelligence refers to any computer program or algorithm that generates or alters a photograph by adding something new and was not the photographic creation of the photographer.
BBCC's position on AI is as follows:
AI generated photographs are not eligible for submission in BBCC competitions. Generative AI tools which add new content are not acceptable in BBCC competitions. All entries submitted in BBCC competitions must be the result of direct human effort and creativity.
BBCC's position on what AI assisted processing is allowed is as follows:
AI tools or software to enhance or retouch entrant-captured photographs are permissible if the primary creative input remains with the photographer. Processing programs with AI editing tools can be used for processing images as long as content is not generatively added.
BBCC's position on Creative or Altered Reality Images is as follows:
Creative or Altered Reality Images can be submitted in BBCC competitions. Creative or Altered Reality Images are images that have been substantially manipulated using various techniques with the resulting image differing significantly from the original subject matter. All elements of the image must be the photographic creation of the entrant. No part of the image can be created with AI software using text inputs.
If in doubt about a specific use of editing software that uses AI please ask the question at the next club meeting that you attend and prior to submitting the proposed image for a BBCC competition.
For external competitions such as the APS Cup the competition rules of the organisation hosting the competition apply.
